- 1. INTRODUCTION
-
- Welcome to Comic-Pro...
-
- Comic-Pro is a database system which manages your comic book and
- magazine collections. Comic-Pro uses state-of-the-art software
- techniques to provide you with a easy to use system. You control
- Comic-Pro by selecting choices from menus and list boxes. You can
- also use a mouse with Comic-Pro. These features make Comic-Pro
- powerful yet fun to use.
-
- Comic books and magazines are managed in the same manner. You only
- need to understand how Comic-Pro organizes your collection. Don't
- worry, it's easy to understand. Here goes! Comic-Pro separates you
- collection into titles and issues.
-
- Titles are the headings of comic-books and magazines. Some headings
- for comic-books are Silver Surfer, Spider-man, X-men and Fantastic
- Four. A few magazine headings are Mad, Crazy!, Conan, Time; even
- Newsweek!
-
- Issues are the actual books and magazines. You may have one title yet
- many issues of the title, even the whole collection! A beginning
- collector may only have 10 issues of one title; X-men volume 1 issues
- 200 to 210. Comic-Pro considers this as ten issues of one title.
-
- Comic-Pro generates four reports. The Title Collection Report, Title
- Statistics Report, Missing Issues Summary Report and Missing Issues
- Detail Report. These reports are tools for managing your collection.
- This diagram illustrates how Comic-Pro is organized. This information
- is provided so you may investigate and expand your system in the
- future.
-
- Your issues are saved in ISSUE.DBF. When you generate reports the
- files on the right are created; MISSINGD.TXT, MISSINGS.TXT, STATUS.TXT
- and TITLE.TXT. Your reports are text files which you can import into
- your other software, including wordprocessing software. Your issues
- database contains reference codes to the titles, artists, grades and
- publishers you use. The database files on the left; TITLE.DBF,
- ARTIST.DBF, GRADE.DBF and PUBLISHR.DBF contain the names for your
- reference codes.
-
- The licensed version of Comic-Pro comes with a full manual. Inside
- the manual you will find detailed information of all your system
- files. This allows you to understand your system and create
- extensions, like new reports.
-
- Enjoy.
-
-
-
- 2. INSTALLING COMIC-PRO
-
- Comic-Pro has an easy installation program. To install Comic-Pro,
- turn on your computer then insert your Original Demo Diskette into
- your floppy disk drive.
-
- The install program will work from floppy drive A: or B: Asumming
- your using floppy A, logon by typing A: , then press <ENTER>. Start
- the installation by typing INSTALL, then press <ENTER>.
-
- You will be prompted for the installation drive. Most likely, you
- only have one hard disk drive. This hard disk is called C: If you
- have more than one hard drive you will see a box with each one listed.
- Select the hard disk by pressing <ENTER>.
-
- Next, you will be prompted for a INSTALL directory. The installation
- program will copy the system into this directory. The default
- directory is \COMICPRO, so press <ENTER>
-
- Finally, when the install process is done, you will be returned to
- your DOS prompt, A: or B: Remove the Demo Diskette and press
- <CTRL><ALT><DELETE>. Your computer will restart. When you see a
- prompt similar to C:\. Start Comic-Pro by typing COMICPRO, then
- press <ENTER>.
-
-
-
- 3. STARTING COMIC-PRO
-
- Turn on your computer. After your computer loads DOS you will see a
- message like C: This is your DOS prompt. To start Comic-Pro type
- COMICPRO, then press <ENTER> This command will run COMICPRO.BAT.
- The file instructs DOS to switch into the Comic-Pro directory and run
- CP.EXE (Comic-Pro system file)
-
- Comic-Pro has the following video options:
- CP BW, Black & White video
- CP C43, 43 Line Color
- CP C50, 50 Line Color
-
- The option you select depends on what kind of monitor you have. You
- may edit the COMICPRO.BAT file so your option is included as your
- default. Refer to the table below to determine which you can use with
- your monitor.
-
- Comic-Pro defaults to 25 line color mode. If you have a CGA or
- MONOCHROME monitor select your option by specifying it on the command
- line. For example: To use a MONOCHROME monitor type CP BW, followed
- by <ENTER>
-
- You can make this change permanent by editing your COMICPRO.BAT file.
- Currently COMICPRO.BAT contains the command CP, which starts the
- system in the default video mode. You may edit the COMICPRO.BAT file
- to include your video option.
-
-
- 4. USING COMIC-PRO
-
-
- 4.A. THE BASICS
-
- You control a highlighted bar with the cursor keys (left arrow, right
- arrow, up arrow and down arrow). On the main menu you can press any
- arrow key, however when your highlight is in a vertical window press
- up arrow or down arrow.
-
- NOTE: Quick-Key Menu Access Options can be selected by pressing the
- first letter of the name. In vertical windows the option key is
- separated by a ")".
-
-
- 4.B. THE MAIN MENU
-
- Comic-Pro uses a horizontal main menu bar with
- pull down windows. Above are the main menu options. When you select
- a main menu option a vertical window appears. This window contains
- sub-options for your menu choice. If you select the title option the
- following sub-options appear.
-
-
- 4.C. USING A MOUSE
-
- The mouse is a pointing device. With a mouse you can control the
- cursor without using your keyboard. When you place your mouse cursor
- on a valid option it becomes highlighted. Clicking on the left mouse
- button selects the current option. A mouse improves your productivity
- in Comic-Pro and is also fun.
-
- NOTE: Your mouse will NOT operate unless you load your MOUSE DRIVER
- first (Please refer to your mouse manual if necessary). This system
- was developed with a Microsoft Mouse. Any Microsoft compatible mouse
- will work with Comic-Pro .
-
-
- 4.D. WHAT ARE CODES?
-
- Comic-Pro uses codes for quick entry of titles, artists, grades,
- publishers and issues. The code is usually an abbreviation for a
- title, artist or publisher name. Listed below are some examples:
-
-
- CODE TYPE CODE CODE NAME
- TITLE CODE AS AMAZING SPIDER-MAN
- ARTIST CODE JB JOHN BYRNE
- GRADE CODE NM NEAR MINT
- PUBLISHER CODE MCG MARVEL COMICS GROUP
-
-
- You should use codes that you can easily recognize, try to avoid
- complicating your codes unless necessary. In cases where many titles
- have similar names try to develop a simple code scheme.
-
- If you can't remember a code then press <F2> and they will appear in a
- pop-up list box. If your codes are consistent you will be able to
- enter them directly into forms rather than using the pop-up list box.
-
-
-
- 4.E. WINDOWS & LIST-BOXES
-
- This is a listbox. Comic-Pro displays your comic-book and magazine
- data inside of windows and pop-up listboxes. You can control windows
- and listboxes by using a keyboard or your mouse.

- the DELETE instructions when you are in a DELETE window or list-box.
-

-
-
- Windows and listboxes have mouse controls on the lower left-hand
- corner as shown above. The controls are buttons for moving up, down,
- left and right. The exit button appears as a triple bar. The far
- left shows the current record number of your data.
-
- HINT: LEFT Click on the Record number
- to SEARCH for data in a lisbox or window.
-
- Position the mouse cursor on one of the controls and click the right
- mouse button once. The mouse controls are quick! DO NOT leave your
- finger on the mouse button. If you try to pass the top or the bottom
- of the window you might hear several mouse squeaks!
-
-
- 5. REPORT MENU
-
-
- 5.A. USING REPORTS
-
- This menu is used to generate reports. When a report is viewed or
- printed, a ASCII text file is generated. This allows you to use your
- reports with other software programs. Using another program or word
- processor you can load the ASCII text file then add additional
- information. The report files always contain the last report
- generated. To keep multiple reports of the same type then you must
- rename the file or copy file onto another directory on your hard
- drive.
-
-
- 5.B. TITLE-COLLECTION OPTION
-
- This is the main Comic-Pro report. Each title is printed along with a
- breakdown of issues that you have and issues that you need. The check
- box is printed before each missing issue so that you can use it to log
- the issues you purchase. When more than one issue is missing
- Comic-Pro considers them as a missing series. Check boxes are printed
- before each missing series.

- 5.C. TITLE-STATISTICS OPTION
-
- This report lists the statistics of each title in your collection.
- The report shows how many issues of each title you have, it's value,
- how many issues you are missing and the it's completeness percentage.
- The complete percent is determined by using the oldest issue of the
- title as the starting point and the newest issue as the ending point.
- The system checks the issues between the start and end to verify if
- you have it or if it is missing. This method is used because some
- collectors do not start with
-
